SteamDry is an EU‑funded Horizon Europe project that develops breakthrough superheated steam drying technology to radically cut energy use and CO₂ emissions in the paper, board, tissue and nonwoven industries. Led by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the 17‑partner consortium brings together leading research institutes, universities, technology suppliers and industrial manufacturers from eight European countries. At Pulp & Beyond 2026, SteamDry and its partners present how electrified, closed‑loop steam drying can reduce costs, decarbonise production and support the green transition of pulp and paper value chains.
SteamDry is an EU‑funded Horizon Europe project coordinated by VTT that develops and pilots superheated steam drying (SSD) for web‑like materials such as paper, board, tissue and nonwovens. SSD enables nearly complete recovery of latent heat in a closed‑loop steam system, targeting up to 60% energy savings in the drying stage, around 40% for entire production lines, and paving the way for CO₂‑free paper and board manufacturing.
The consortium brings together 17 partners from Finland, Spain, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Italy, including research institutes, universities, technology suppliers and major industrial end‑users in the pulp and paper sector. Partners such as Valmet, Metsä, Sappi, Ahlstrom, Sofidel, Smurfit Westrock co‑develop and validate solutions from pilot to industrial scale, ensuring strong market relevance and upscaling potential.
At Pulp & Beyond 2026, SteamDry and its partners showcase pilot results, energy‑saving potential and integration concepts, highlighting alignment with EU climate and industrial strategies such as the 2030 Climate Target Plan, Processes4Planet and REPowerEU. Visit our stand to meet project experts and industry partners, explore collaboration opportunities and discuss how SSD can support your decarbonisation roadmap and competitiveness.
